English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EALD)
The EALD program at Mawson Lakes School supports students who speak or identify with another language or dialect.
There are several modes of delivery used at Mawson Lakes School for supporting EALD learners.
EALD teaching models are based around one or more of the following modes:
- direct – intensive Standard Australian English (SAE) language instruction is provided to groups of students
- collaborative – EALD teachers and class or subject teachers share responsibility for learning design, teaching, assessment and evaluation
- resource – EALD teachers’ expertise is used as a professional learning resource for class and subject teachers.
In these ways we are able to support students with a first language other than English, including those transitioning from an IELP (Intensive English Language Program) centre. Click the picture below to access more information.
School of Languages
The School of Languages is a specialist government school that provides programs in a range of languages for primary and secondary students from government, independent and Catholic schools.
Our Mission
The School of Languages was established as part of a vision for a multilingual and inclusive society.
Our charter is to provide access, choice and continuity in language learning for South Australian students, through the provision of quality programs in a broad range of languages R-12, that complement, and supplement languages programs offered in mainstream schools and community language programs.
Our unique context
Students from government, independent and Catholic schools come together after school hours to learn the language of their choice, which is not available in their home school. Lessons are held once a week in a friendly environment of committed professionals and motivated students. This provides for a sustained focus and time for extending students’ learning through a wide range of activities.
