Curriculum
Mawson Lakes School is transitioning to the SA Curriculum from the Australian Curriculum. We are starting with Mathematics and Specialist Subjects, aiming for full adoption and reporting by the end of 2026.
The SA Curriculum framework integrates dispositions, capabilities, and knowledge to foster deep content understanding and the ability to transfer and apply learning across various contexts.

English
English empowers learners to act critically and creatively, and to make meaning in our worlds. In English lessons learners develop their capacity to actively listen, read, analyse, question and interpret information; whilst learning to communicate orally, visually and in written modes.
English learning includes:
- Rigorously teaching The Big 6 of Literacy: oral language, phonological awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension.
- Comprehensive phonics, spelling, and reading instruction using Department Phonics and Spelling Scope and Sequences.
- Explicit teaching of text types and genres for writing skills development.
- Application of writing processes through multisensory experiences, including handwriting and keyboarding.
Our school is committed to nurturing learner’s English dispositions by fostering resilience, curiosity, resourcefulness, empathy, and reflection, empowering them to thrive in diverse learning environments.
Mathematics
Mathematics empowers learners to think critically and make informed decisions which help them thrive in our everyday lives. It helps learners innovate, continuously shaping their future, turn problems into opportunities, and discover the possibilities of the unknown that will sustain and change their world.
Mathematics learning includes:
- Equipping learners to apply mathematical thinking confidently.
- Focusing on problem solving, understanding, fluency, flexibility, and reasoning.
- Engaging learners with challenges in various contexts.
In the SA Mathematics curriculum, dispositions are developed and strengthened over time through a range of learning opportunities. Positive dispositions enable learners to embrace struggle, see mistakes as a natural part of learning, investigate what they are curious about, draw on their knowledge and skills, as well as peers and resources, and develop a reflective approach.
